Swiss Cities: St. Maurice Switzerland & Forteresse Historique de St-Maurice

St. Maurice Switzerland is a beautiful village that has a rich history dating to the Roman period. Saint-Maurice is first mentioned in 200 and has some traces of a Bronze Age. In the Roman era it was a customs post, where an import and export tariff of 2.5% was levied. Maurice was the leader of the legendary Roman Theban Legion. Maximian ordered them to harass some local Christians, they refused. Ordering the unit to be punished, Maximian had every tenth soldier killed, a military punishment known as decimation. The men refused was encouraged by Maurice. As a consequence, Maximian ordered all the remaining members of his legion to be executed.
